Epsilon ‘10 – February 4, 2010 – Dept. of EEE, Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, Chennai.

Electricity powers almost everything today from transport systems, gadgets, offices, homes, malls and even the computer you’re reading this on. We electrical engineers are the heart of generating, transmitting and distributing this amazing form of energy. We are also at the forefront of almost every imaginable form of science and technology.

But are we really doing the right things? Are we making sure that the energy being generated is sustainable and that it comes from renewable resources? Estimates predict that by the end of the century, almost all the non-renewable resources like coal will be depleted. This is indeed alarming. What are we going to do about it? Generating energy from alternative and renewable resources is the only answer. But at the present rate of development, we will never be able to rely fully on these resources anywhere in the near future. There are too many obstacles we have to tackle. However, we can at least try and consume less.
